Thing of the past ...

The 1882 firehouse in the town of Ridgway, which calls itself the "Gateway to the San Juans," in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
Highsmith, Carol M., 1946-, photographer
Created / Published: 2015-06-03.
Headings:
- United States--Colorado--Ouray County--Ridgway
- America
- Gateway to the San Juans
- Ridgway Firehouse
- True Grit movie
- Michael McCullough
- Lucy Boody
Genre: Digital photographs--Color--2010-2020
Notes:
- Title, date and keywords based on information provided by the photographer.
- The building may have originated as a residence for railroad workers, then morphed into city hall, and then became the town firehouse. Its belfry has always lacked a bell, because it was a prop, added by the producers of the 1969 John Wayne movie "True Grit." At the date of this image in 2015, the building served as the studio of Colorado sculptors Michael McCullough and Lucy Boody. Remote Ridgway declined alarmingly in the 1980s after plans were afoot to flood the little town to make a reservoir; several building owners abandoned their buildings or allowed them to deteriorate. When the reservoir plans evaporated, the town began a period of slow growth and gentrification.
